85-year-old woman dies of coronavirus in Ahmedabad. India’s death toll now at 12

Another patient died of the novel coronavirus in India on Wednesday, taking the total casualties of the viral infections to 12 in the country.

An 85-year-old woman in Ahmedabad died of Covid-19 on Wednesday, the Gujarat health department confirmed.

The woman had travelled abroad and was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad on March 22 after developing coronavirus symptoms.

Doctors have said that the patient was suffering from many complications.

This is the third death to be confirmed on Wednesday. Two other deaths were reported from Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, the first for each state.

A 65-year-old woman succumbed to coronavirus at a government hospital in Indore on Wednesday, becoming the first case of Covid-19 death in Madhya Pradesh. The woman had no history of travelling abroad in recent times and this means she contracted the infection in the country.

She was facing difficulties in breathing which led to further deterioration in her condition. Besides, she was diabetic and despite all efforts by doctors, she could not survive.

In Tamil Nadu, a 54-year-old man infected with coronavirus died at a hospital in Madurai in the early hours of Wednesday, the first death recorded in the state due to the contagion. The man had a medical history of prolonged illness with “uncontrolled diabetes”.

The Ahmedabad woman is the second Covid-19 patient to die in Gujarat. Coronavirus claimed its first victim in Gujarat on Sunday when a 67-year-old man, who had tested positive for the infection, died at a private hospital in Surat on March 22.

The Surat man, with travel history to Delhi and Jaipur, was admitted to a private hospital in Gandhinagar on March 17 with several complications related to kidney and asthma. He tested positive for coronavirus on March 21, officials said.

He did not have any travel history to a foreign country.

Apart from Covid-19, the patient suffered from various other ailments, including acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, multiple organ failure and acute kidney failure.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Gujarat went up to 39 as four more people, one of them with travel history abroad, tested positive for the new coronavirus on Wednesday, a health department official said.

On Wednesday, one new case was reported each from Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara, principal secretary (health) Jayanti Ravi told reporters.

Of these fresh infections, one patient has a history of travelling to Dubai in recent times, while the others are cases of local transmission of the viral disease, she said.

With this, the total number of cases in Ahmedabad stands at 14, Surat and Vadodara at seven each, Gandhinagar at six, Rajkot four and Kutch one.
