Narayan Singh, an independent candidate contesting the 2020 Bihar elections from Sheohar assembly constituency, has been shot dead. Two bike-borne assailants opened fire at Narayan Singh when he was campaigning in Sheohar ahead of the first leg of voting scheduled for October 28.
Preliminary reports indicate that Janata Dal Rashtrawadi party candidate Narayan Singh was canvassing for votes in Hathsar village under Purnea police station limits on Saturday. Two armed miscreants took advantage of the large crowds interacting with Singh and opened fire at him.
Supporters rushed Narayan Singh to the Sheohar Sadar hospital after bullets hit him in the chest. He was later referred to the private Nandipat Memorial hospital in Sitamarhi but succumbed to bullet wounds on the way. He was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the private hospital.
Two of Singh’s associates also suffered bullet wounds and are being treated at hospitals in Sitamarhi and Sheohar. Supports alleged that 10-15 armed men opened indiscriminate fire at Narayan Singh’s convoy. Three of the candidate’s associates, namely Santosh Kumar, Abhay Kumar and Alok were also hit.
It has also come to light that deceased Narayan Singh’s supporters beat one of the two armed miscreants who opened fire at him to death. His supporters also gathered in large numbers outside the hospital in Sitamarhi where the candidate succumbed to bullet injuries.
There were more than 24 criminal cases registered against Independent candidate from Sheohar, Narayan Singh. A resident of Naya Gaon in Dumri Katasri province of Sheohar district, Narayan Singh had served as the head of the Naya Gaon panchayat as well as a Zila Parishad member from Dumri Katastri.
Sheohar sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Rakesh Kumar said that armed men who claimed to be party workers committed the crime while the victim was canvassing for votes.
Narayan Singh was among 16 candidates who filed their nominations from Sheohar, including RJD’s Chetan Anand and sitting MLA Md Sharfuddin of the JD(U). Sheohar falls in phase-2 and votes in this district are scheduled to be cast on November 3.
