Coronavirus in India: Citizens urged to offer Friday namaz from home

District magistrates (DMs) in Uttar Pradesh have urged the people to offer Friday namaz (prayer) from home amid the nationwide lockdown in the wake of the novel coronavirus, or Covid-19, outbreak.

Speaking to India Today, the district magistrate of Rampur Aunjaneya Kumar Singh said, “The local administration held a meeting with the ulemas and clerics in the view of the nationwide lockdown. They have assured us that people will observe namaz from home. Only the imams and staff, not exceeding five people, will offer prayers at mosques in the district.”

DM Moradabad RK Singh said, “On our request, the ulemas and clerics have realised the need of social distancing and precautionary measures required to curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. They have assured us that people will not come out to offer namaz in mosques in order to cooperate with the lockdown.”

All India Muslim Personal Law Board took to Twitter and wrote, “Due to novel coronavirus pandemic, Muslims are recommended to offer Zuhur from home instead of praying Jumah at mosques. DON’T come out for congregational prayers and #StayAtHomeSaveLives. It is mandatory upon all to avoid causing harm to their fellow citizens. #NoJumahInMasjid”

DM Hapur Aditi Singh tweeted a letter issued by Jamia Arabia Khadil-Ul-Islam, Jama Masjid which mentions that not more than three persons will offer namaz on Friday in mosques due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement, Lucknow imam Khalid Rashid Firangi Mehli said, “It is very important for all us to maintain social distancing amid rising Covid-19 cases. I request people belonging to the Muslim community to offer Friday namaz from home. In mosques, imams and the staff not exceeding five people, should only offer prayers.”

UP Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Chandramohan said, “Most of the countries across the globe are battling the novel coronavirus pandemic including India. Therefore, it is very important for the people to remain indoors, follow the advisory issued by the government and offer prayers from home. Contribution of every citizen is must to battle Covid-19.”
