A 22-year-old nurse at the state government-run Sir Takhtasinhji General Hospital in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar died after hanging herself inside the hospital’s storeroom, police said on Sunday.
She took the extreme step to protest her proposed marriage to a man chosen by her parents, they said.
The nurse was identified as Ami Makwana, a resident of Rohidas Vaas in Bhavnagar’s Anandnagar area. She joined the government hospital as a contractual nurse around one-and-a-half months ago, The Indian Express reported.
The hospital administration found Makwana hanging by a rope tied to the ceiling fan in a storeroom on the seventh floor of the hospital building, police said.
“The storeroom was also being used as a staffroom by members of the hospital. There is a washroom inside and a few chairs were placed there. When the guard went to the room at around 8:30 pm on Sunday, he found its door bolted from inside. He alerted the hospital administration, who then broke the glass panels on the door open and found the nurse hanging,” Hathising Gohil, police sub-inspector (PSI), Neelambaug, was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
Makwana’s duty had ended at 8 pm, he added.
A suicide note, purportedly written by Makwana, was recovered by the police from the storeroom.
“In the two-page suicide note, Makwana wrote that her family had found a match for her but she did not want to get married to that man. Therefore, she was ending her life,” Gohil said, adding that her family members had said that she was also upset as she could not pass a government recruitment examination recently.
A case of accidental death has been registered by the Neelambaug police with Gohil as the investigating officer.
