Mr PM, economy derailed, train of recession coming full throttle: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that the Indian economy has “derailed”. Citing a media report which claimed that India’s economic slowdown is showing no signs of abating, Rahul Gandhi also said that the result of the current condition of the Indian economy would be a “train of recession coming at full throttle”.

Addressing PM Modi and dubbing Nirmala Sitharaman as “incompetent”, Rahul Gandhi said that if the finance minister is telling you “there is a light at the end of the tunnel”, it is, he said, a “train of recession coming” in full speed.

“Mr PM, The economy has derailed and there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. If your incompetent FM is telling you there is light, trust me it’s the train of recession coming at full throttle,” Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter.

Rahul Gandhi’s attack on the prime minister came just a day after the official data showed that that the growth of eight core industries dropped to 0.2 per cent in June, mainly due to contraction in oil-related sectors as well as cement production.

The government on Wednesday also revised downwards the growth rate of these eight sectors for May to 4.3 per cent from the earlier estimate of 5.1 per cent. The eight core sector industries — coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizer, steel, cement and electricity — had expanded by 7.8 per cent in June last year.

On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had claimed that the “callous attitude” of the Narendra Modi government in rolling out GST and demonetisation has sent the Indian economy is in tailspin and brought it to the brink of meltdown.

“Demonetisation and GST rollout are perfect examples of ineptitude and lack of depth in the Modi government. Their callous attitude has sent the Indian economy in tailspin and has brought it to the brink of a meltdown,” Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter.
