Pink ball Test: Happy that Ishant Sharma will be playing his 100th Test and hope he plays a lot more- Virat Kohli

India captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday applauded veteran bowler Ishant Sharma who will be playing his 100th Test match in the pink-ball Test in Ahmedabad on Wednesday and said that the bowler deserves full credit for such longevity.

Kohli went on to say that Ishant Sharma could have prioritised white-ball cricket to prolong his career but praised the bowler for giving importance to Test cricket.

“It’s rare to see a pacer have such longevity these days. Ishant could’ve easily prioritised white-ball cricket but full credit to him that he didn’t. I’m so happy that he is playing his 100th Test and hope he plays for India for many more years,” Virat Kohli said in his press conference on Tuesday.

He went on to add that he and Ishant go a long way back to the time they played cricket together for Delhi and said that there is great trust between the two players.

In an interesting anecdote, Kohli also shared that Ishant was sleeping when the news of him getting selected for India was announced and said that he ‘had to kick him to give him the news’.

“Ishant started playing state cricket with me. When he got selected for India, he was sleeping & I had to kick him to give him the news. That’s how far we go. We have great trust between us. I’ve been very happy to see him enjoy his bowling over the years,” Kohli added.

Despite featuring in domestic white-ball competitions and the Indian Premier League, Ishant has been deemed a white-ball specialist. Ishant last played ODIs for India in 2016 and T20Is as early as 2013.
