Residents local to the Sainsbury’s store, which reopened this morning after having been shut since the incident, spoke about the incident.

One said: “I heard a noise and then by the time I got to the window, the car was into the wall, and then pretty soon afterwards the emergency services were on the scene, and then the air ambulance.

“Then I saw the gentleman when he was being lifted into the air ambulance, that must have been an hour later.

“I have only lived around here for three years, but it is the biggest incident that has happened on my doorstep.”
