Group of protestors who have been protesting to save Aarey where Metro car shed is being constructed gathered at Aarey on Sunday afternoon to thank CM Uddhav Thackeray who has put a stay on Metro work. Uddhav Thackeray has also sought a report from MMRCL and till then no trees will be cut at Aarey.
Not only this, Uddhav Thackeray has also ordered to withdraw cases against the Aarey protestors.
“I have issued orders for withdrawing cases against Aarey protestors and have also asked for review reports of the financial situation.” said Uddhav Thackeray.
Celebrating their victory with banners thanking Uddhav, protesters distributed sweets.
Activist Stalin Dayanand said, “We thank CM Uddhav Thackeray for his decision to stop metro work at Aarey and save the Aarey forest. The earlier government had not listened to the appeals of protesters and endangered life and flora and fauna of the forest. We hear that the car shed could be shifted to a location in Goregaon. Our efforts have finally paid off with CM putting a stay on the metro work.”.
Meanwhile, residents of Mahul village in eastern Mumbai also joined the Save Aarey campaigners.
Mahila residents, wearing caps with messages, wanted to send message to Chief Minister that if he can put stay on metro project to save trees, then for saving human lives, the government should act for Mahul residents as well.
Residents of Mahul village have been facing severe health issues due to pollution from refineries and factories joined Aarey protesters.
“Movement to save trees has been initiated and same should be done to save lives of residents of Mahul village residents, “said Nandu Shinde from Mahul village.
Another resident of Mahul, Pravin Haldankar said, “Our children are suffering from severe respiratory ailments, the health condition of senior citizens has turned worse and the government is yet to think of some plan to help us.”
