Victim of Bury New Year’s Eve stabbing named as murder suspect appears in court
Anthony Junior Murray, 25, was charged with murdering a 24-year-old man, named in court as Joe Burton, in an incident just before midnight on New Year’s Eve on Tarn Drive in Redvales.
Murray was brought before Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on the morning of Friday January 2 charged with murder and possession of a bladed article.
A spokesperson for the courts and tribunal service confirmed that no plea was entered and Murray, of Tarn Drive, was remanded into custody ahead of a further hearing in the crown court.

Police said earlier this week that they had initially been called to reports of a “disturbance” just before midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Speaking on Thursday morning, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “At around 11.55pm on Wednesday December 2025 31, we were called to reports of a disturbance at an address on Tarn Drive in Bury.
“Officers attended the scene and located a male in his 20s with injuries consistent with a stabbing.

“Despite the best efforts of emergency services at the scene, the male sadly died.
“A male and a female in their 20s have both been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody for questioning.
“Investigations are ongoing.”

Police officers remained on the scene on Tarn Drive, a residential area lined with family homes found of Manchester Road, overnight and into New Year’s Day, Thursday January 1.
Detectives, uniformed officers and forensics specialists remained at the scene until long into Thursday afternoon.
Tactical Aid vans remained at the scene on Tarn Drive, at the junction with Windermere Drive until after around 2pm that day.

Police confirmed on Friday January 2 that the woman in her 20s who was arrested alongside Murray had been bailed pending further enquiries.
Murray is expected to appear before Minshull Street Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on Monday January 5.
