Werapong Prapha has stepped down from his position as deputy leader of the Democrat Party, announcing he will assume the role of Thai Trade Representative, leading negotiations with the European Union.

Writing on Facebook, Mr Werapong said his resignation was prompted by the need for continuity in trade talks that have spanned multiple governments. He said his new role is focused on advancing Thailand’s economic interests, not tied to any political party.

“My ideology has not changed, only my role,” he wrote. As Thai Trade Representative he works with the government, which could conflict with the Democrat Party’s role as opposition party.

As such, he chose to resign to avoid any problems. He added his decision was made after discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpan, and in consultation with former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who has supported his work.

He expressed gratitude to the party’s executive committee. He urged the public to continue supporting his efforts, saying: “Even though I am no longer deputy leader of the Democrats, I hope everyone will walk with me. What matters most is moving Thailand forward in this time of overlapping crises.”

Wading into the matter earlier on Sunday, Mr Abhisit said Mr Werapong should resign from both his party position and membership if he accepts the political appointment as an adviser to the minister.

Mr Abhisit said the role offered to Mr Werapong was a formal political appointment, distinct from informal advisory roles, as it carries official status and remuneration.

Mr Werapong will join the advisory team of Ms Suphajee, in recognition of his experience as a former trade representative.
