Xbox unveils disc-to-digital feature

Microsoft is launching a new “disc-to-digital” feature for Xbox consoles, enabling gamers to convert their physical game discs into digital versions for easier access while retaining the ability to play via physical media.

The feature supports physical discs for Xbox One and Xbox Series X. While Microsoft has not released a complete list of compatible titles, it stated that “thousands of games” are supported, with plans to expand the library in the future. Discs for the original Xbox and Xbox 360, however, are not supported.

To use the feature, players simply insert a physical disc into their console and launch the game. A menu prompt will allow them to “Claim Digital Entitlement”, granting ownership of the digital version so the game can be played without needing the disc inserted every time.

Games unlocked through this process support both Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming capabilities. Crucially, the original physical disc remains fully functional.

Addressing potential resales, Microsoft clarified that if a user sells their disc, the digital entitlement transfers to the new owner’s Microsoft account once inserted into their console, revoking the previous owner’s digital access.

Microsoft said the feature forms part of its long-term strategy to preserve players’ access to their game libraries, ensuring titles remain accessible even as hardware technologies and distribution formats evolve.

The announcement comes amidst recent controversy surrounding Sony over reports regarding the potential phasing out of physical PlayStation discs by 2028, which raised concerns that digital ownership might effectively turn into temporary licensing.

While Xbox has made no official announcement about abandoning physical media, industry rumours suggest its next-generation console, codenamed “Project Helix”, will retain full physical disc support, drawing largely positive feedback for Microsoft.

The disc-to-digital feature was to begin testing on Aug 31, 2026, for members of the Xbox Insiders program before a broader rollout to additional games and users in the future.
