Man in court after ‘extremely rare’ classic car damaged in Flintshire crash

Martyn Ellis, of Fenton Way, Bolton, appeared before Mold Magistrates Court on Wednesday (February 12).
The 51-year-old changed his plea to guilty with “mitigating circumstances” on the day he was due to stand trial for a charge of driving without due care and attention.
Rachel Drew, prosecuting, said the incident occurred at around 7pm on April 25, 2024 on the B5123 near the Springfield Hotel, Pentre Halkyn.
The court heard Ellis, driving a van, was travelling in the direction of Holywell. Ian Glass was driving his vintage 1951 Marauder car in the opposite direction.
Ellis’ van, which was partially on the wrong side of the road, collided with the front offside of the car as it approached a bend close to the A55 flyover.
The court heard that the Marauder car, described as “extremely rare”, suffered in excess of £30,000 worth of damage, and Mr Glass went to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd with leg and hip pain.
The defendant had made “every effort” to correct the error, and told the court he was confused about the road layout – thinking it was one-way and that he needed to be in the right hand lane to turn right.
Magistrates sentenced Ellis to a £210 fine, and added five points to his previously clean driving licence.
