OpenAI releases smarter, more intuitive GPT-5.1 models

OpenAI has announced the launch of GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking, upgraded versions of its large language models that boast enhanced analytical capabilities and deliver more efficient responses.

The key improvement across both models is their enhanced ability to follow instructions and provide clearer, more helpful information to users.

OpenAI said that GPT-5.1 Instant, currently the most widely used model, has been refined to adopt a warmer conversational tone. Furthermore, it offers responses and information that are significantly clearer and more useful to the user.

A major focus of the upgrade for GPT-5.1 Instant is the improvement of its instruction-following capabilities, ensuring that the ChatGPT service adheres to user commands and requirements with greater accuracy.

This model also introduces adaptive reasoning, a capability that allows GPT-5.1 Instant to analyse whether a question requires more thought before responding. This feature is particularly useful when dealing with highly complex queries or instructions, making it suitable for tasks such as coding or performing mathematical calculations.

In the case of GPT-5.1 Thinking, the model’s response time for each query has been optimised. It will respond faster to simple questions or commands, while complex instructions or questions will necessitate a longer processing time to generate detailed and highly useful answers for the user. The responses generated by GPT-5.1 Thinking have also been refined to be easier to understand and less overly complicated, particularly for technical questions or those requiring highly specific, specialised information.

OpenAI is also introducing three new options for customising ChatGPT’s tone and style: Professional, Candid and Quirky. These options are intended to meet the needs of users seeking a truly unique chatbot experience. For users who want fine-grained control over ChatGPT’s interactions, detailed settings can be adjusted, including the conciseness of the response, the tone of voice, the vocabulary used and even the frequency of emoji usage.

Both GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking are now available for users on the Pro, Plus, Go and Business subscription packages. The service will be gradually extended to free users and those using the service without logging in to an account in the near future.

The previous GPT-5 model will remain available as an option for a period of three months (for paid users only). This allows users who are not yet ready to transition to GPT-5.1 the opportunity to compare the differences between GPT-5 and GPT-5.1.
