Two jailed for brandishing weapons in street confrontation in front of children

Corey Chadwick and Byron Chadwick, both 21, appeared at Bolton Crown Court to be sentenced.

The pair were both charged with affray and possession of a bladed article after threatening a man in Lenham Gardens, Breightmet, on August 13.

Recorder Peter Guest said that the incident – which lasted around five minutes – was captured on CCTV.

He said the footage shows Byron, of Lenham Gardens, “armed with a hammer”, confronting a man and shouting that he doesn’t “give a f*ck” about him.

Recorder Guest said: “Confronted by you and your hammer, he punches you and causes you to fall to the ground”.

Corey, of Cartmell Crescent, Tonge Moor, then appears on the footage “holding a large knife” and threatens the man.

Byron got to his feet as Corey approached the man “who kicked Corey to the chest” and “punched Byron again and disarmed him”.

Mr Guest said that at this point “people from nearby homes” had started to come on the scene and he added that children were present.

He said: “Byron had been disarmed and the footage shows him leaving the area – and returning shortly thereafter, now having armed himself with a knife.”

He said there were “members of the public milling about” as the two returned “armed with knives”.

Mr Guest said: “Corey Chadwick, you made a number of blows towards the man – fortunately it appears none made contact.

“Whilst I accept you are both young, and the assessment of the probation service is that you both lack maturity – one doesn’t need a great deal of maturity to know what will happen when a knife comes into contact with the body of another.

“Tragically, that’s how people are killed.”

The pair were arrested shortly after, and Corey said that they “had not made any injuries” and “only wanted to scare the man”.

Recorder Guest called the incident “a targeted attack”, aggravated by the fact it was committed in a public area with a large number of people present – including children.

But he said the two were “of good character”, “both young” and had a “realistic prospect of rehabilitation”.

He said: “I then have to consider if the sentence can be suspended – in my judgement, it is not possible to suspend the sentence.

“I’m quite satisfied you pose a risk of harm, and the appropriate punishment can only be achieved through custody.”

They were both jailed for 12 months for affray and possession of a bladed article.
