University launches investigation into ‘extremely serious’ allegations

The university, which was formerly the University of Bolton, issued a statement after online publication The Mill printed allegations surrounding financial matters.

A university spokesperson said: “The allegations that we have been made aware of are extremely serious and, as a result, the Vice Chancellor has invoked the university’s internal procedures to ensure they are dealt with appropriately.

“We invite The Mill to share any relevant evidence they claim to have supporting these allegations.

The statement comes just over a week after a senior manager at the University of Greater Manchester left with immediate effect after different allegations based on a audio clip were reported in The Mill.

The statement confirmed that Joseph Wheeler had left the university.

He left his role at the university with immediate effect according to a statement released by the institution on February 10 this year.

The statement on February 10 said:  “Initial allegations put to the university via the media, without supporting evidence, were published on Thursday, February 6.

“They had not been raised through the university’s official internal procedures.

“February 7, was the first opportunity the university had to examine first hand any evidence, when an edited audio clip came into our possession.

“Following discussions between the named individual involved and the University Vice Chancellor, we can confirm that the senior manager referred to in the article has left the university with immediate effect.

“The university would like to remind colleagues that issues and evidence-based concerns should always be raised through the university’s proper internal procedures and they will be dealt with promptly and fairly.

“The appropriate action will be taken after a thorough investigation of the evidence.

“It is disappointing that matters which could and should have been resolved internally were referred to the media, creating a potential detrimental impact upon the university.

“The university is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion.”
