Wake County graduates face scorching heat for memorable ceremony at Raleigh Convention Center
Wake County graduates arrived early and lined up outside the
Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh on one of the hottest days of the
year.
Most were seen standing in the shade, but there was no escaping
the heat on Wednesday.
“There’s no staying cool, I’m hot, man,” Justin Candela, a
Middle Creek High School graduate told WRAL News.
“I was sweating up there, I can’t lie,” said Ivana
Krstanovic, a Middle Creek High School graduate. “But it’s cooler now, I think
that it’s over. I feel more calm.”
Families gathered waiting to celebrate their students told WRAL News their focus was on their graduates and trying their best to stay safe in this
heat.
“The key is being prepared,” Mayra Fuentes said. “Know
where to park. Remember where you parked. It’s pretty hot out here! It feels
like 90-some degrees. But when I stepped inside for a moment, it’s great air
conditioning.”
Several people told WRAL News they had to adjust when they first
walked inside the convention center. Some graduates described the A/C inside as “chilly.”
But a pair of brothers said despite the extreme heat, they
were excited this moment brought them closer together.
“I didn’t get to walk that stage in 2020, but getting to
see him walk the stage, one of the best things I ever wanted to see,” said
Jason Candela-Marcial.
His younger brother, Justin Candela, was wearing his robe he
once wore as a 2020 Middle Creek graduate.
