Bolton: Bin chute fire breaks out on Fern Street, Deane

The fire involved a bin chute at a block of flats on Fern Street, not far from Deane Road on the way out of the town centre and broke out just after 6pm on the evening of Saturday December 9.

An eyewitness said he saw a plume of smoke emerging from what looked like the first floor of the middle block on Fern Street.

He said: “All I could see out of my bedroom window was fire engines had come down Fern Street.

“I saw them there and when they were outside the building a plume of smoke came out.”

He added: “I’ve spoken to one of the officers and he confirmed that yes there has been a fire.”

The man said that he saw several fire engines as well as a rapid response unit and an unmarked vehicle at the scene.

He said: “I remember we had a similar situation a while ago and there were vehicles that had come all the way from Salford.”

As many as six fire engines from various stations were called to the scene.

The fire was put out at by around 7.15pm that same evening, according to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and no injuries have been reported as a result.

As of 7.30pm fire crews were still at the scene but confirmed that the blaze had been put out.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At just after 6pm today, Saturday December 9, six fire engines from Bolton, Bolton North, Farnworth, Atherton, and Horwich as well as the hydraulic platform from Leigh attended a fire involving a bin in a bin chute of a building on Fern Street, Bolton.

“Firefighters used one hose reel to extinguish the fire and make the scene safe.

“Crews remain in attendance.”

As yet no further details have been released about the cause of the blaze.

In the event of a fire or any other kind of emergency, members of the public have been advised to call 999 as soon as it is safe to do so.
