Deane residents express concerns over Briercliffe Road incident

Emergency services were sent to Briercliffe Road, Deane, on Saturday.

A helicopter was seen in the area and the street was sealed off.

Police have released a statement urging people not to speculate about what has taken place.

But residents say they are being told nothing which has left their worried.

Ward councillor Abdul Achta has said it is important for the police to release more information.

He said: “I saw a helicopter as I was out canvassing at the time.

“I saw the lights of police cars heading up Wigan Road.

“I think it is important for the police to release a statement so the residents can know what is going on.”

On the street people expressed concerns about what had taken place.

Ismail Gedi, a long term resident of the Briercliffe Road, said: “I have heard nothing about it.

“The street was close us, they asked us if we had heard or seen anything.

“Cars could not come into the street.

“We could leave and come back but not with cars.

“We do not know what happened.

“It is very concerning.”

Another woman who lives on the street said police told her to stay at home.

She said: “We do not know anything.

“Police were saying we are not allowed to leave.

“They said it was not safe.

“When we asked what was happening they said there was an incident and you are not safe.

“I have lived here for 14 years, we are safe here noting happened it is out of character.”

Another man said: “I came back on Saturday and I asked what happened.

“They said there was a serious crime.

“I have lived here for more than 12 years and it is not safe.

“There are a lot of people selling drugs and breaking car windows.”

Police previously released a statement on the incident.

Detective Sergeant Paul Warburton of GMP’s Bolton CID said: “We understand that the community are worried about this incident, and I want to assure everyone that we are doing everything within our power to reassure and keep the local community safe.

“While there are circulating rumours of a potential firearms discharge, it’s important to note that this has not yet been confirmed. I urge members of the public not to speculate on yesterday’s events and come forward if they know anything at all which could help our investigation.

“We have deployed extra resources and visible patrols. They are here to provide additional reassurance to the local community and are available to answer any questions, offer advice, and provide reassurance during this time.

“We urge anyone with information about this incident, including CCTV, doorbell, or dashcam footage, to come forward and share it with us. Your cooperation is crucial as we work to piece together the full and factual details of this incident and locate those involved.”

The Bolton News has asked police for an update on the incident.
