‘Dragon Ball’ creator Akira Toriyama dies

Akira Toriyama, the creator of the legendary manga series “Dragon Ball,” died of acute subdural hematoma, when blood collects between the skull and brain, on March 1, a publisher and his production studio said on Friday. He was 68.

Dragon Ball, launched in 1984, became popular worldwide, spawning an anime series, video games and other content.

“It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm…However, he had left many manga titles and works of art in this world,” said a statement on the website of the publisher, Shueisha Inc.

Shueisha said that it was “greatly saddened by the sudden news of his death”.

Born in Aichi Prefecture in central Japan, Toriyama debuted in 1978 and gained popularity following the release of his “Dr Slump” manga, which was serialised in the Shukan Shonen Jump weekly in 1980.
