Skipping measles vax may lead to rare brain disorder in kids: Docs

Lucknow: Doctors have raised concern over the missed measles vaccinations during the pandemic that has potentially led to increased risk of both viral infection and a rare brain condition called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE).

Unicef data shows routine vaccinations of many kids were postponed between 2021 and 2022.

Prof RK Garg, neurology department head at KGMU, highlighted this concerning trend, emphasising the increased vulnerability of unvaccinated children to SSPE.

SSPE is a progressive brain disorder caused by persistent measles virus infection. It damages the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation and irreversible harm.

Seisures, cognitive decline and movement problems are some of the distressing symptoms children with SSPE experience. While no cure exists, antiviral medications can slow the disease’s progression. Garg reiterates the critical role of measles vaccination in preventing SSPE.

“Measles vaccination is a simple yet effective shield against SSPE. Parents must ensure that children complete their vaccination schedule, including measles. This decision can protect them from immense sufferings,” he said.

Garg’s warning comes amid a worrying increase in SSPE cases in India, attributed to vaccination programme disruptions and decreased public awareness about measles vaccination importance.

Dr Ravi Yadav, a researcher at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences NIMHANS, Bangalore, agrees with Dr Garg’s concerns, and stressed on the need to prioritise measles vaccination to prevent needless tragedies and secure children’s healthy future.
