The United Thai Nation Party (UTN) opposes the government’s plan to export Jet A-1 aviation fuel to Vietnam and the Philippines, arguing the policy mainly benefits oil refineries while undermining Thailand’s tourism sector and energy security.

UTN list-MP and deputy leader Atavit Suwanpakdee on Wednesday called on the government to halt aviation fuel exports approved by the National Security Council (NSC) following a proposal from the Ministry of Energy. Mr Atavit argued the ministry’s explanation regarding overflowing fuel storage was inaccurate and incomplete.

He said the war in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz would eventually affect Thailand’s domestic fuel supply, making it risky to export aviation fuel at this time. He cited Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services (BAFS), which operates fuel storage facilities at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, claiming the company’s storage tanks are still only about half full.

This showed Jet A-1 fuel stocks had not exceeded storage capacity, he said.

Mr Atavit also accused Energy Ministry officials of failing to explain that many refineries had already tweaked production formulas to reduce aviation fuel output and shift more supply to diesel.

While such adjustments increase refinery costs, he said the ministry instead pushed for exports so refineries could continue selling Jet A-1 fuel at higher global market prices and boost profits.

Mr Atavit proposed the government retain the fuel for domestic use and negotiate with airlines to lower fares on domestic flights to increase visitor numbers at major tourist destinations. Some airlines have expressed willingness to reduce fares if aviation fuel costs are lowered.
