Young Bolton woman returns to UK after crash abroad

Ellie Horrocks, 22, from Westhoughton was involved in a major accident on June 26, where she was then taken to the intensive care unit at Nicosia Hospital.

The ‘fun-loving’ woman had gone on a trip of a lifetime to Cyprus in May.

But following a trip on a buggy to see the sunset, Ellie suffered a fractured spinal cord and collarbone, and Ellie’s aunty Sarah Horrocks says that she is being assessed to see what treatment is needed.

Sarah said: “We are really pleased that she is in the UK because she can see her family and friends and we hope it can aid her recovery.

“She is being assessed and we believe it is a long road to recovery, but we don’t know until she has been assessed, so we will wait and see what happens.

“She is out of her coma now and has come quite a way in a week.

“The hospital [Nicosia Hospital] were amazing with her and they basically saved her life.”

Sarah says that whilst they are still remaining positive the family are still in ‘shock’ and ‘upset.

She added: “It’s been a complete rollercoaster and it has had a huge impact.

“Now we are focusing on Ellie getting better.”

Leanne Horrocks – Ellie’s mum – set up a GoFundMe in a desperate bid to bring her daughter home to take her to a specialist neurology hospital in the UK.

And through people’s generosity, the family managed to raise more than £70k, which helped bring Ellie home.

Sarah said: “The family are so overwhelmed with all the support from messages and donations, and we will be eternally grateful to everyone, including the hospital.

“People have been incredible, and it shows that people come together in a time of need.

“Ellie wouldn’t be recovering without the donations and support.”

Leanne is continuing to remain by Ellie’s side during her recovery.

Ellie returned to the UK on Sunday (July 9), and she has since been admitted to a neuro trauma hospital who will assist with her ongoing recovery.
